In the past, many Nashville SEO experts have tried to gain as many links as possible from a wide variety of sources, with little regard for their backlink profiles or anchor text ratios.
In the beginning, it may have sprung from a series of tweaks to the algorithm by Google. Since then, many people have tried to guess what the anchor text for each backlink should be.
You don’t have to be concerned about anchor text if people link to your site organically. A site that links to yours will not be able to regulate the anchor text they use if they do it on their own.
However, this is a perfect scenario. The real-life and ideal life isn’t always the same.
There aren’t many of us who have the luxury of having people knocking on our door and asking whether they can connect to our work.
This is a problem. No doubt about it, we require backlinks to be found. To be effective, these links must appear natural to Google.

Is There a Definition for “Anchor Text?”
There are two types of anchor texts: the hyperlinked and the non-hyperlinked ones.

Link Building Without the Use of Anchor Text
There are a trend among Nashville search engine optimization (SEO) professionals to acquire the most backlinks possible and then “mix up” the anchor text and hope for the best.
This technique has two main problems.
Firstly, the backlink profile you’re creating lacks a clear direction. No matter how many backlinks you develop, you could still be out of business before you realize your anchor text assumptions were wrong, even if you build 100 backlinks to a website.
Time and money are two things you’ll have to spend to gain backlinks to your site.
Both have a finite supply.
What happens if you develop a backlink profile that appears to be completely unnatural?
Your time and money will be wasted, and you could lose a lot of money on Nashville SEO clients or possibly lose these organizations as clients entirely.
A Strategic Link Building Plan
How can we build backlinks without squandering resources on links that will only serve to hinder our efforts rather than help them?
To develop a backlink profile that is not only safe from algorithm modifications but also rises in the ranks with fewer connections, there are two important components.
It’s a more focused method of constructing links.
Only those links that I know I need are targeted, rather than trying to obtain as many links as possible, and I hope they’ll suffice.
In place of creating links and hoping that my backlink profile appears natural, I maintain a natural profile throughout the process.
Google is the best place to see if your backlink profile seems natural.
When Google places a website at the top of their search results, they’ve already shown us what a natural profile looks like.
Investigate the backlink profiles of the highest-ranking sites and learn from their strategies.
However, focusing on a single site ranked number one isn’t enough. There are a lot of different websites that you need to check out.
As a general rule, our links should come from sites related to the topic at hand. Our links should be of high quality; that much is clear.
Most of us make educated guesses when it comes to anchor text.
After getting sick of assuming what anchor text to use for high-profile clients (read: Marcus Lemonis), I set out to discover exactly what Google was looking for in a top-ranking backlink profile.
Consequently, I shut myself up in my office and conducted a slew of searches for hours on end.
I found the most popular websites at the top of every category, sub-category, and industry. After that, I went through every backlink profile.
I generated 12 anchor text categories that could be used to categorize every single link, and then I categorized each link individually.
In the hundreds of thousands, please.
The following are the 12 categories of anchor text that I devised for all of the links in the world:

- An anchor that is an exact match to one of your key phrases is called a keyword.
- A blog post title, or the SEO title, is often used as the anchor text for a page title.
- “This link building article here” is an example of a “keyword plus” anchor, which incorporates one of your major keywords and additional non-keyword phrases.
- This anchor incorporates your brand name and a key term (e.g., “RANK FIRE SEO link building service”), making it more relevant to your target audience.
- Part of your keyword phrase appears in this anchor text (e.g. “if you’re building”).
- As the anchor text, this is simply your company’s name.
- This anchor is natural because it does not contain keywords or brand names.
- As the anchor, this anchor points to a URL that includes all of that URL’s URL characters.
- Your URL should be formatted: “the rank Fire SEO.com” as your anchor text for this page.
- The anchor text for this link is the home URL, even if the link links to an inner page.
- When an image link has no alt text, this anchor is used.
- URL with www’s – this is the anchor URL written without the HTTP:// prefix – (i.e. www. thank Fire SEO.com).
When I had all of the links sorted and compared, my SEO world was transformed.
Almost all of the top-ranked websites exhibited striking relationships.
This is the key to top ranks; Google seemed to be saying to me.

3. Anchor Texts fall into three main categories:
Three basic categories are used to organize the 12 different types of link anchor text.
- These are links with the anchor text of one of your key phrases (exact match, e.g. “link building”) as one of the anchor texts.
- These links feature one of your key phrases in the anchor text, but the anchor text also covers other words that are not part of your keyword phrase (e.g. “this is why link building has become”).
- If your key phrase is part of your brand (e.g., “The RANK FIRE SEO”), you can use these anchors without worrying about their relevance to your keyword.
The following method of anchor text variation will help you establish a backlink profile that matches the other #1 ranked sites.
Keep in mind that Google’s algorithm is continually changing, so these ranges may vary slightly.
Anchor Text Strategy for the Home Page
This is how your backlink shape should break down for your homepage SEO.
- Brand, Natural, and URL Anchors make up between 80% to 95% of your links.
- You should include up to 10% of your links in the category of Key Phrases Mixed Into Anchor.
- Exact Match Anchors should make up no more than 5% of your total backlinks.
The Anchor Text Strategy for the Inner Page.
Your backlink anchor text profile should look like this on your inner pages.
- You should have between 35% and 45% of your backlinks in the form of Brand, Natural, and URL Anchors.
- Fifty to sixty per cent of your links should be Key Phrases Mixed Into Anchor Tags (KPA).
- Exact Match Anchors should make up 10% of your links.
I’ve listed both the homepage and the inner pages individually because, as you can see, the backlink profile for each differs greatly.
At the very least, your homepage is used to establish brand trust with Google when it comes to link building. As you can see, your brand name or a variation of your URL should appear as the anchor text on as many of your links as possible.
Let’s take a look at Overstock.com as an example. Thousands of large shopping-related search keywords are ranked first by these people.
The following is an example of Overstock’s homepage backlink profile (screenshot taken from the Rank Fire SEO dashboard):
They have 98 per cent of their homepage links using their brand name or URL as the anchor. Only 2% of the links pointing to their main page use one of their keyword phrases. There’s no more than 2% in it.
Overstock has over 900 homepage links to keep in mind.
Your homepage should be the primary destination for most links to your site. It should have at least twice as many links pointing to it as your next most popular page.

Every time someone links to an inner page of my site, I make an effort to get at least one link back to my homepage. Although this isn’t a hard and fast rule, most of your links should lead back to the homepage.
When it comes to a natural backlink profile, this is what Google looks for.
A lack of trust with Google will almost always prevent your other pages from ranking in the top three.
Key terms should be emphasized more aggressively on your inner pages. Invest most of your time and resources here.
To achieve many exact match anchors to your inner pages, you still need to follow the percentages to match other inner pages of the top-rated sites.
According to Rank Fire SEO, “guest post service” is their most popular keyword.
This is the anchor text for the links leading to that page falls in the ranges above.
This page’s backlink profile is in the same ballpark as that of the majority of the top-ranking websites. Google, on the other hand, thinks it’s perfectly normal.
This can be traced back to the incredible level of trust they have established with Google as a brand.
Over 300 backlinks are pointing to the homepage of The RANK FIRE SEO, as shown below:
They have more than 200 links to their homepage that use either the brand name, or in some circumstances some form of the URL as the anchor text.
Google now recognizes their brand.
You may see another example of the percentages indicated above on this #1 rated page.
If you type “backlinks” into Google, you’ll see that the top-ranked site is “backlinks.”
It’s backlinko.com that ranks highest for this term. This is the backlink profile for their number one post:
Because it appears natural to Google, you’ll see these percentages on many top-ranked pages.
